Pocket watches were originally developed as a portable timepiece to be worn in a waistecoat as horology developed from a carriage clock. These days the designs and styles available are slimmer and more user friendly - for example some feature a date. Generally available in a silver or yellow gold finish with a base metal of either brass or stainless steel. However a few are also made with a rose gold tone finish. Mechanical pocket watches require winding up each day and quartz battery versions are more accurate. Go for a battery quartz movement for everyday use (no daily winding up), Go for a wind up mechanical movement for occasional use. (No flat battery when watch required after a period not being used).
